Mental Wellness

EACH AND EVERY FIREFIGHTER

The serious behavioral health challenges faced by first responders are getting increased attention in recent years.

As reported recently in the Los Angeles Times,

firefighters demonstrate a higher rate of suicide than those recorded among the general population,

exceeding over 100 firefighter suicides each year at the national level.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “I’m doing fine,” or “that would never happen to me,” but the mounting evidence is making the crisis more clear:

while the specific timeframe and symptoms might differ from person to person, the distinct stress and trauma associated with work in the fire service impacts the wellness and quality of life of each and every firefighter.

and then seen how that got chipped away over time. There’s even been events in the last few weeks, working in the busiest station in the country, where there’s a different intensity in the injuries and the situations you face. That has a cumulative effect over time.”
